Mayo Speech Test – Monitoring Indicators of Neurologic Health and Disease (MST-MIND)

What is the purpose of this study?

Our speech can reflect the health of our brain. Conditions like Alzheimer's and related disorders can change the way we speak, so monitoring speech can help doctors spot early warning signs. The MST is a simple test that tracks these changes. During the test, people say specific words or sentences while researchers pay attention to how clearly and quickly, they speak and how their voice sounds. By following these speech patterns over time, doctors can detect changes that may signal problems with brain function, supporting earlier diagnosis and better care.

Who is a qualifying participant?

  • Adults 18 years or older.
  • Fluent in English.

What are we asking of you in this study?

Participants will access the MTD website from home using any device to complete two short tests of memory and thinking: a word-list memory test and a processing speed test.

  • Memory test: Words are shown one at a time. After the list is presented, participants see four words and select the one that was on the list. This process continues until all words have been tested.
  • Processing speed test: Participants see pairs of symbols and decide as quickly as possible whether they are the same or different. Each trial has 12 items, and participants complete 4 trials.
