Biomarkers and Rates of Progression in Dementia study (Bio-RaPID)

What is the purpose of this study?

To learn how factors such as age, sex, medical history, structural and social determinants of health, genetic variants, and other brain changes may make some patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD related disorders (ADRD) more susceptible than others to rapid cognitive decline.

Who is a qualifying participant?

  • Age 18 and older.
  • Demonstrates signs of Rapidly Progressive Dementia (RPD) attributed to AD/ADRD.
  • Meets RPD diagnostic criteria when screened for study enrollment.
  • Has a reliable collateral source (spouse/partner, adult child, close friend).
  • Willing to complete study-specific procedures.

What are we asking of you in this study?

You will be asked to visit Mayo Clinic for 3 in-person study visits over three years: at the time of study enrollment and two subsequent annual visits. You will also be asked to participate in remote (phone/telehealth) follow-up assessments 3- and 6-months after enrollment. During in-person visits, we will ask for

  • Medical History: More detailed questions about your medical history, medications, family history, social history, and health habits.
  • Vital Signs: Measures of blood pressure, temperature, pulse, height, weight, waist and hip circumference.
  • Bloodwork: Blood is drawn to collect important health information and risk factors. (Please note, this study does not provide results for this bloodwork to participants)
  • Cognitive Testing: Written tests and questions will be administered by an examiner to evaluate memory and thinking.
  • Neurological Evaluation: A doctor will conduct a neurological/physical exam.
  • Imaging: MRI of the brain, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans.
  • Cerebrospinal Fluid: Lumber puncture to obtain fluid for biomarker assessment (For more information about these procedures, click here).
